HTC Windows Phone 8X Review

HTC Windows Phone 8X is one of the latest Windows Phone 8 smartphones from HTC. HTC WP 8X is the premium version of HTC WP 8S, and this time it’s available for US market (HTC WP 8S not sale in US). And today we’re going to review HTC WP 8X and see what this phone could offers.

Just like the character of Windows Phone 8 which is very colorful, HTC WP 8X also comes with colorful and stylish design. There are four different colors of HTC WP 8X, blue, yellow, red, and black.

HTC WP 8X looks very wide due to the wide frame on the touch screen. HTC WP 8X also looks fat, but once you holding it in your hands, it’s actually quite slim.

Like almost every HTC smartphones, HTC WP 8X comes with unibody design, means you cannot replace the battery, the battery on HTC WP 8X is non removable.

That means, if the battery is broken, you probably have to buy a new phone, instead of new battery.

HTC WP 8X has the same materials as HTC one X, which is polycarbonate. The texture of this phone is just like rubber, so it’s not too slick.

Overall the design of HTC Windows Phone 8X is very good, except for the wide frame in the front. The phone feels luxurious, elegant and stylish.

HTC Windows Phone 8X has the same display type as HTC one X, Super LCD-2. Not only that, the screen resolution also same, HD 720p or 1280 x 720 pixels.

The 4.3 inches display of HTC WP 8X is very good, the colors are natural, the viewing angle is good, also performs well under direct sunlight.

But despite HTC WP 8X and HTC one X has the same display type and resolution, the quality is still better on HTC one X.

Just like other high-end smartphones, the display of HTC WP 8X also equipped with anti scratch protections, Corning Gorilla Glass 2.

Now let’s talk about the hardware, HTC WP 8X powered by dual core krait processors 1.5 Ghz, it’s the same CPU as HTC WP 8S but with faster speed (8S is only 1 Ghz).

For graphics, HTC WP 8X equipped with adreno 225 GPU, unlike the HTC WP 8S that has adreno 305 GPU. You might be thinking 8S has better GPU than 8X. No, you’re wrong, actually adreno 225 is a lot better than adreno 305. Don’t let the number confuse you.

HTC WP 8X has bigger RAM compared with HTC WP 8S, the 8X comes with 1GB of RAM, while the 8S is only 512MB of RAM.

From the hardware specs i mention, theoretically HTC WP 8X is capable of playback full HD movie (1080p) without any problem.

For the internal storage, HTC WP 8X has 16GB of internal memory, and there is no micro SD slot on this phone. But i think 16GB should be enough for storing apps and files (music, photos, videos).

HTC WP 8X now has NFC feature, not like 8S which lack of NFC feature. For battery capacity HTC WP 8X has little bit bigger batery capacity compared with HTC WP 8S.

HTC WP 8X has 1800mAh battery, while 8S is only 1700mAh. On normal usage, theoretically the battery on 8X could last for at least one day.

HTC WP 8X comes with the latest Windows Phone 8 operating system. Notice that actually there is no different between Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5 or 7.0, specially on the user interface.

Windows Phone 8 has the same live tiles user interface like the previous windows phone, only now you can change the size of the live tiles.

Microsoft is not allowing the phone manufacture to modify the user interface, so every WP 8 phones looks the same even though it has different makers.

Other bad things about WP 8 is that it lack of popular games and apps, unlike android or ios which has large collections of software.

But the good thing is i don’t experience any lag at all while using this phone, everything is smooth, the live tiles works perfectly.

When it comes to video playback, HTC WP 8X capable of playback full HD movie 1080p without any lag. HTC WP 8X could recognize various format such as MP4, M4V, AVI, WMV.

Just like most of HTC smartphones, HTC WP 8X also has beats audio feature, you can activate this feature from the music player. The sound quality is quite good i must say, specially if you have compatible beats headsets.

HTC WP 8X has 8 mega pixels camera on the back which also has LED flash for low light photo shooting or video recording.

The photo quality is quite good i must say for both indoor and outdoor photo. The image noise are very minimum and the colors are natural.

Like the 8S, HTC WP 8X also has dedicated camera button on the side, so you don’t have to use the touch screen to take pictures.

For video recording, HTC WP 8X capable of recording full HD videos 1080p on MP4 format. And the video result also very good just like the photo quality.

Unlike HTC WP 8S, the 8X now has a front facing camera. The front facing camera is very special because unlike other smartphones which usually has 1.3 mega pixels, HTC WP 8X has 2.1 mega pixels front facing camera.

HTC Windows Phone 8X
Rear camera 8 mega pixels
LED flash yes
Video record 1080p (front and rear) at 30 fps
Front camera 2.1 mega pixels
Dedicated camera Button yes

HTC Windows Phone 8X is a very good smartphone with luxurious design, great camera, and great hardware specs. Basically HTC WP 8X is the premium version of HTC WP 8S, and just like the 8S, the weakness of this smartphone is in the operating system.

The problem is that WP 8 platform is lack of popular apps (such as instagram, spotify, etc) and games. Plus the price of an apps or games on WP 8 is very expensive. I think microsoft should do something about that if they want to survive in the smartphones business.
