Storage device has become a necessity for every computer user. The bigger the storage means more files/data could be stored. But if that storage could be taken to travel that would be great benefit for the user.

Western digital (WD) My Passport Essential 500 GB is one of the storage device that could be taken to travel. This WD My Passport Essential 500 GB is using USB 3.0 data transfer which is alot faster than USB 2.0.

The WD My Passport Essential 500 GB have a simple yet elegant looks with its glossy colour. This storage device have weight only 145 gram without the USB 3.0 cable (175 gram with the USB 3.0 cable).

There are 5 different colour that you can choose, which is black, silver, red, blue, and white (all glossy colour). The weakness of this external hard drive is that the glossy colour (the body) could easily scratch.

My advice is dont put this external hard drive carelessly, if you dont want any scratch on your portable hard drive.

We run a couple test on WD My Passport Essential 500 GB to see how the performance, the result was quite impressive. The average reading speed WD My Passport Essential 500 GB is 68.5 MB/s while the writing speed is 69.3 MB/s (on avarage).

With this high speed reading capability you could transfer your files faster.  Another test with 1 GB file copy show that the reading speed of WD My Passport Essential 500 GB is alot faster than its writing speed (23 second read, and 32 second write).

WD My Passport Essential 500 GB also have great feature which is WD Smart Ware. This allow you to backup your files (on the computer)  easily, all you have to do is install the software and all files on your computer will be shown and you can choose which files you wanna backup to the portable hard drive.

If there is a change file on your computer , that file will automaticlly backup by the software to the WD My Passport Essential 500 GB.
