Sony Xperia U vs HTC One V

In this year (2012), besides the super smartphone HTC one X, HTC also released HTC one V. Among the HTC one series, HTC one V is the cheapest. And today we’re going to compare HTC one V with Sony Xperia U. Both phones are in the same price range and we’re going review it here to find out which one is better, which one is worth to buy.

Design

HTC one V comes with unibody design, that means you can’t open the back cover easily. It seems like every phones on HTC one series is using the same unibody design. While on Sony Xperia U, you can open the back cover easily. The Design of Sony Xperia U is more flexible than HTC one V.

HTC one V is using metal materials for the body , while Sony Xperia U is using plastic materials. That’s why HTC one V is 5 grams heavier than Sony Xperia U. HTC one V weight 115 grams and Sony Xperia U is about 110 grams.

On HTC one V you will get 3 sensitive buttons, the back, home, and recent apps button just below the screen. And for Sony Xperia U you also get 3 sensitive buttons, the back, home, and menu button (also below the screen).

From the appearance, HTC one V looks slimmer compared to Sony Xperia U. But when we hold in the hands, both HTC one V and Sony Xperia U feels comfortable.

Screen

HTC one V have bigger screen 3.7 inches compared to 3.5 inches of Sony Xperia U. But the screen resolution is almost the same, 480 x 800 pixels for both phones. The screen of both phones also capable of output 16 million colours.

The screen of Sony Xperia U have higher pixel density 280 ppi, compared to 252 ppi on HTC one V. They doesn’t comes with high technology like gorilla glass or super AMOLED. They’re just regular capacitive LCD touch screen.

Hardware

For the hardware specs, Sony Xperia U definitely wins over HTC one V. Because Sony Xperia U already equipped with dual core processors. Sony Xperia U is using ARM Cortex A9 dual core CPU, speed 1 Ghz. While HTC one V is using 1 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon single core CPU.

For graphics or GPU, Sony Xperia U also have advantage with the use of Mali-400MP GPU compared to Andreno 205 on HTC one V. Mali-400MP definitely outperforms Adreno 205 GPU.

For RAM and ROM both phones are equal, they both using 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of ROM (internal storage). The difference is on HTC one V you can add more storage using the microSD slot, while the Sony Xperia U doesn’t have microSD slot. So if you have a Sony Xperia U, you’re limited only to 4 GB of internal storage.

Software

HTC one V comes with the latest android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system. While Sony Xperia U is using older operating system, android 2.3.6 gingerbread. There’s no indication from sony that Xperia U will get official upgrade.

HTC one V is using the latest HTC sense UI version 4.0, this user interface is really nice. Unfortunately you can’t change the application shortcuts on the bottom. Meanwhile Sony Xperia U is using Sony’s Timescape UI. With this UI, you can see the active widgets by pinch the home screen.

Connectivity

Both Sony Xperia U and HTC one V comes with the standard Wifi and 3G/HSDPA connection. But Sony Xperia U have extra features with DLNA connectivity and also USB OTG (On The Go). With USB OTG, you can plug any USB compatible device to Sony Xperia U.

Meanwhile on HTC one V, when you plug-in to the computer, you will get several options such as use it as disk drive for the computer, charge only, HTC sync, USB tethering, and internet pass through. Using internet pass through option, you can use the computer internet connection to access internet on your phone. This is really a cool feature.

Camera

HTC one V and Sony Xperia U are using the same camera resolution on the back, it’s 5 mega pixels equipped with LED flash and autofocus. You can find dedicated camera button on Sony Xperia U.

HTC one V have better photo results because it has aperture 2.0 which makes brighter and sharper photos. You can also shoot photos and record videos at the same time using HTC one V.

For video recording, both phones are capable of output HD 720p video resolution at 30 frame per seconds. Sony Xperia U have front camera with VGA resolution, while HTC one V doesn’t have front facing camera.

Compared to Sony Xperia U, HTC one V have better OS, better camera, and better features plus it also have a microSD slot. I would recommend to choose HTC one V over Sony Xperia U. Unless the dual core CPU is really important for you.

      if you’re not really a gamer, i would recommend htc one v,
      i think gaming experience would be better on xperia u.
      xperia u could be upgrade to ICS too, but it lack of micro sd slot, you can use usb stick to add more storage…cause xperia u has usb OTG feature

    i got this mobile for reviewing from one of friend running a mobile store and in my review i find xperia u to be better in all aspects expect the memory issue.the camera of xperia u is better than one v n gaming is superb on xperia u n display is sharper compared to one v .sound is bit more clear in xperia u compared to one v having beats audio..
    i would suggest u to go with xperia u as it have an 4.0 ics update n its better than htc one v if u dont have memory issue …
