Samsung Galaxy S Advance vs Sony Xperia P

Samsung Galaxy S Advance and Sony Xperia P are two android smartphones with similar hardware specs and not so different price range. They both has 4 inches capacitive touchscreen and running the same android 2.3 gingerbread operating system. In this article we’re going to compare them and see which one is better, Samsung Galaxy S Advance or the Sony Xperia P?

Design

The design of Samsung Galaxy S Advance is similar with the Samsung Galaxy S2, curve shape with silver layer on each side, beautiful design. While Sony Xperia P comes with square shape, also beautiful design.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance is a little bit slimmer than Sony Xperia P, it’s 9.7 mm on Galaxy S Advance and 10.5 mm on Xperia P. The weight of both Samsung Galaxy S Advance and Sony Xperia P are the same, 120 grams.

Display

The super AMOLED display on samsung galaxy S Advance have a very good contrast with deep black colour. Sony Xperia P even have better display screen called reality display combine with bravia engine which increase image rendering quality.

Not only that, the display screen of Sony Xperia P also have WhiteMagic technology. Every pixel not only consist of subpixel RGB (Red Green Blue) colour, but also have white colour as extra subpixel.

With this technology, the screen of Sony Xperia P capable to output 935 nits of brightness even on direct sun light. While on indoor, Sony Xperia P will automatically adjust the brightness to save the battery.

Both Samsung Galaxy S Advance and Sony Xperia P are using 4 inches screen, but Sony Xperia P have larger resolution and higher pixel density. For screen quality Sony Xperia P definitely wins over Samsung Galaxy S Advance.

Hardware

Sony Xperia P and Samsung Galaxy S Advance have very similar hardware specifications. Both Xperia P and Galaxy S Advance powered by dual core Cortex A9 CPU 1 Ghz and Mali-400MP GPU. The chipset also same for both phones, it’s the U8500 chipset.

The difference is that Samsung Galaxy S Advance only have 768 MB of RAM, while Sony Xperia P have 1 GB of RAM. With 1 GB of RAM there’s no need to worry that the phone will become slow when running multiple application.

Sony Xperia P lack of micro SD slot, all the Xperia NXT series (Xperia P,S,U) doesn’t have micro SD slot. While on Samsung Galaxy S Advance you can add micro SD up to 32 GB.

Other difference is that the battery capacity on Samsung Galaxy S Advance is bigger than Sony Xperia P, it’s 1500 mAh on samsung and 1305 mAh on sony.

Software

Sony Xperia P and Samsung Galaxy S Advance comes with rather old android operating system, the gingerbread 2.3.6 right out of the box. With exception for Xperia P there’s already available upgrade to android 4.0.4 ICS.

The user interface on Samsung Galaxy S Advance is the TouchWiz UX 4.0, while on Sony Xperia P using the Timescape UI. You will get 7 pages of homescreen on Galaxy S Advance and 5 on Xperia P. You will also get software like kies air on Samsung Galaxy S Advance, which enables you to share content on your phone and communicate with other devices wirelessly.

NFC feature is becoming important on high-end smartphone, Sony Xperia P is one of the smartphone that has onboard NFC chip. So you can use this feature on Xperia P. While on Samsung Galaxy S Advance, NFC is optional, only the I9070P model that has onboard NFC chip.

Besides the NFC feature, Sony Xperia P also have advantage with USB OTG feature which enables you to plug-in any compatible USB devices such as USB stick, USB mouse, USB keyboard, etc. You won’t get this feature on Galaxy S Advance.

Camera

The rear camera on Sony Xperia P is definitely better than Samsung Galaxy S Advance. It’s 8 mega pixels equipped with LED flash, autofocus. It has geo-tagging, touch focus, 3D sweep panorama, and also face/smile detection features.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance only have 5 mega pixels camera on the back with LED flash, auto focus. It also has similar features just like Xperia P. The photo result is better on Sony Xperia P.

For video recording, again Xperia P wins over Galaxy S Advance. Sony Xperia P capable of recording HD resolution video 1080P, compared with 720P on Samsung Galaxy S Advance.

But for front facing camera, Samsung Galaxy S Advance is better than Sony Xperia P. It’s 1.3 mega pixels on Galaxy S Advance and only VGA resolution on Xperia P.

Benchmark

Here’s the benchmark result, Samsung Galaxy S Advance versus Sony Xperia P. It shows that Galaxy S Advance is little bit higher on antutu benchmark, but Xperia P win on quadrant standard benchmark.

Conclusion

Currently there’s no sign of ICS update for Samsung Galaxy S Advance, so if you buy it you will stuck with gingerbread OS. But for Sony Xperia P, the ICS update is already available. I would recommend Sony Xperia P over Samsung Galaxy S Advance because of these reasons :

  1. bigger RAM
  2. better screen
  3. HD 1080p video recording
  4. NFC, USB OTG features
  5. micro HDMI port

The only drawback of Sony Xperia P is that it doesn’t have micro SD slot, but it’s not really a problem because the 16 GB internal storage should be enough to store photos, videos, games, and applications. Sony Xperia P definitely better than Samsung Galaxy S Advance.
