Sony Xperia U Review

After sony are separate from ericsson, sony begins makes its first product which is the sony NXT series consists of Xperia S, Xperia P, and Xperia U. Today we’re going to review the last one, The Sony Xperia U.


The sony NXT series Xperia S, P, and U have similar looks, that is box design with sharp edges and curve on the back.

Compare to the other sony NXT series, Sony Xperia U are the cheapest among them, and that’s why Sony Xperia U also have the smallest-compact size.

But there’s one unique feature of Sony Xperia U that you won’t find in other Xperia series. Sony Xperia U have a unique bottom cap layer.

You can change this bottom cap layer with four different colour such as black, white, pink, and yellow.

With Xperia pureness the lights on the transparent layer will change base on dominant colour that appear on the screen.


The screen resolution of Sony Xperia U are 480 x 854 pixels (3.5 inch) with quite high pixel density 280 ppi. The screen can output 16 million colour and also it’s a multi touch capacitive screen.

Like other Xperia series, Sony Xperia U also equip with onboard mobile Bravia Engine which makes the quality of photos and videos better.

The response of the screen also very good, there’s no lag at all, all games and application running smooth.


Among the three Xperia, Sony Xperia U have the lowest camera resolution with 5 mega pixels (2592 x 1944 pixels) on the back and VGA resolution on the front.

This back camera already equip with flash for low lights photo shooting. Other great features of this camera are face and smile detection, geo tag, autofocus, touch focus, 3D sweep panorama, image stabillization.

For video recording, the back camera can produce 720p video resolution at 30 frame per seconds. The camera also equip with video light.

Operating System

Currently Sony Xperia U are using android gingerbread 2.3.7 with promise from Sony can be upgraded to android 4.0 ICS.

The user interface of Sony Xperia U are Timescape UI same as other Xperia phones. When you’re in homescreen you can do pinch to see the application overview.


Sony Xperia U have dual core processors with 1 Ghz of speed on each core. For the RAM it’s using 512 Mb DDR memory. For the graphics, Sony Xperia U are using Mali-400 MP GPU.

Sony Xperia U actually have 8 GB of internal storage (ROM), but its only 4 GB accessible for user.

The biggest drawback of Sony Xperia U are it’s lack of external storage (no microSD slot) plus the internal storage are too small with only 4 GB.


Using the latest antutu benchmark application, Sony Xperia U gets 4403 points, higher than HTC Evo 3D.

When we test using quadrant standard edition, Xperia U gets 2210 points, which is one level below LG Optimus 2x.


Sony Xperia U is a great android phone with dual core CPU, great camera, unique design, and also Sony Mobile Bravia Engine onboard.

But it’s lack of external storage makes this phone feels incomplete. You’re limited only to 4GB of internal storage because there’s no microSD slot on this phone.
