Sony Xperia Go ST27i Review

Sony Xperia Go ST27i Review

Sony Xperia Go (ST27i) is the successor of the previous durable smartphone Sony Xperia Active (ST17i). Xperia Go comes with much better hardware compared with Xperia Active, but with the same durability. Sony Xperia Go is probably the most durable android smartphone we have ever test. Read the entire article to find out the performance of this android smartphone.

Design

Unlike Xperia Active which has sporty looks, Xperia Go comes with simple but very elegant design. I really like the looks of Xperia Go, it has rough texture around the bezel area and on the back cover, which makes better grip.

Xperia Go is a 3.5 inches phone, so it’s not too big to carry around, but not too small also, perfect size for daily use. Xperia Go measures 111 mm of height, 60 mm of width, and 9.8 of thickness.

Surprisingly the weight of Xperia Go is not heavy, very light in fact. The weight of Xperia Go is only 110 grams, it’s the same weight as Xperia Active, but with bigger dimension on Xperia Go.

Overall, the design of Xperia Go is really good, simple but elegant. And for the colour selection there are three different colours that you can choose, black, white and yellow. I personally love the yellow one, because it doesn’t looks too mainstream.

Sony Xperia Go
Height 111 mm
Width 60.3 mm
Thickness 9.8 mm
Weight 110 grams

Display

Sony Xperia Go has 3.5 inches touchscreen display, LED-backlit LCD type. The screen resolution of Xperia Go is HVGA, 480 x 320 pixels. It’s the same screen resolution as Xperia Active.

Just like Xperia Sola, Xperia Go also comes with onboard bravia engine that makes the display really bright. But the pixel density is lower on Xperia Go, only 165 ppi compared with 265 ppi on Xperia Sola.

So the viewing angle is better on Xperia Sola, and also Sola has higher resolution compared with Xperia Go. If you compared the two phones side by side, you can see the difference, the screen is much better on Xperia Sola.

Sony Xperia Go
Screen size 3.5 inches
Screen type LED-backlit LCD
Screen resolution 480 x 320 pixels
Pixel density 165 ppi
Colour 16 Million colours
Protection Scratch-resistant glass

Hardware

Sony Xperia Go has the same hardware specs as Xperia Sola. Same CPU, GPU, chipset, RAM, and internal memory capacity. So the hardware performance of Xperia Go would be same as Xperia Sola.

Any 3D/2D games that can be played on Sola could also be played on Xperia Go. HD game like dead trigger could be play without any lag, the movement is very smooth.

And for video playback, Xperia Go could play HD 720p videos on various format such as mkv, mp4, avi, etc. But for HD 1080p (full HD) videos cannot be play on Xperia Go.

Sony Xperia Go
CPU Dual Core 1 Ghz
GPU Mali 400MP
Chipset NovaThor U8500
RAM 512 MB
ROM 4 GB user available (8 GB total)

Software

Just like Xperia Sola, Xperia Go also comes with the old android OS, gingerbread 2.3.7 right out of the box, and ICS 4.0.4 already available as an update. But unlike Sola, it has been confirm that next year Xperia Go will get official Jelly Bean update from Sony.

Just like other Xperia android smartphones, Sony Xperia Go also comes with the Timescape UI, where you can integrate your facebook, twitter, and four square (as well as other social media) account all in one place.

With Timescape UI everything is all in one, even your phone contact may also contains social media links, everything is synchronize. But you can always turn off these features if you want.

With the dual core CPU, navigating the menu on Xperia Go is very smooth, i don’t see and feel any lag, everything is nice and smooth.

Camera

Another similarity between Xperia Go and Sola is the rear camera. Both Xperia Go and Sola has a 5 mega pixels camera on the back, plus LED light and autofocus. Both camera can zoom up to 16 times (16x digital zoom).

Camera features also same for both phones, such as 3D sweep panorama, sweep multi angle, sweep panorama, scenes mode, smile detection, geo tagging, etc.

What about the photo quality? i took some picture using Xperia Go and i can say that the photo quality is almost as good as the camera on Sola.

And for video recording the rear camera capable of recording HD 720p videos at 30 frame per seconds, again it’s same as the camera on Sola.

Sony Xperia Go also doesn’t have a front facing camera, just like Sola. So you can’t make video calls using this phone.

There’s one different from Xperia Sola, Xperia Go doesn’t have a dedicated camera button for quick access to the camera. But this feature is not really necessary at least for me.

Sony Xperia Go
Rear camera 5 mega pixels
LED flash yes
Video record 720p at 30 fps
Front camera no

Conclusion

Sony Xperia Go is not only a beautiful and elegant phone, but also durable, water proof, dust proof, and shock proof. Great phone for people who likes adventure and extreme outdoor activity.

I try couple test, put Xperia Go under water and still be able to use the phone, make calls, receive calls, or even watching HD movie while the phone still on water. No doubt Xperia Go is a high durability smartphone.

But the bad thing about Xperia Go is the screen resolution is too damn low (HVGA) compared with the screen size 3.5 inches. Also the pixel density is kinda low too, only 165 ppi.

The other thing is Xperia Go doesn’t have NFC feature, no NFC chip inside Xperia Go. You cannot play with smart tags and other interactivity using NFC.

And also Xperia Go doesn’t have front facing camera, same as Xperia Sola. So you can’t make video calls using Xperia Go.

But unlike Xperia Sola, Xperia Go will get android Jelly Bean upgrade next year, so you won’t be stuck with android ICS if you buy this phone.
