Sony Xperia E Dual C1605 Review

Sony Xperia E dual comes with android ICS 4.0.4 out of the box (upgradable to jelly bean), powered by single core processors 1 Ghz, adreno 200 graphics, 512 mb of RAM. Here’s a late review of Sony Xperia E dual C1605.

Design

Sony Xperia E has a very stylish design just like most Sony’s smartphones. If you look from the side, the shape of Xperia E is like Xperia J but with smaller dimension and also thicker.

Even though Xperia E made entirely from plastic materials, it feels comfortable when you hold it in your hands. Probably because the back cover has textured.

Height 113.5 mm
Width 61.8 mm
Thickness 11 mm

Display

Sony Xperia E (both dual and single SIM version) has 3.5 inches TFT LCD display. The screen resolution is 320 x 480 pixels (HVGA), it’s the same resolution as Sony Xperia Tipo and Tipo dual.

Both Xperia E dual and Xperia Tipo dual has the same 256k colors, but Xperia Tipo has higher pixel density 180 ppi, compared with only 165 ppi on Xperia E. That makes the screen is much better on Xperia Tipo.

To be honest, the screen of Xperia E (both dual and single SIM version) is not very good i must say. This display is one of the weakness of this smartphone.

Screen size 3.5 inches
Screen type TFT LCD
Screen resolution 320 x 480 pixels
Pixel density 165 ppi
Color 256k colors
Protection Scratch resistant glass

Hardware

Sony Xperia E dual has exactly the same hardware as Sony Xperia J, from CPU, GPU, chipset, RAM size, and internal storage, everything is same. And of course the performance of Xperia E are very similar with Xperia J since they have the same hardware specs.

But compared with other dual SIM card smartphone, like Xperia Tipo dual for example, Xperia E has better performance, because Xperia E has faster processors ( 1Ghz on Xperia E dual vs 800Mhz on Tipo dual).

If you ask me about the gaming capability of Xperia E dual, the answer is yes this phone could play most of games 3D or 2D available on google play. The adreno 200 GPU is very popular for low-end devices and it’s supported by most of games.

But if you ask about HD movie playback, the answer is no Xperia E could not playback HD movie, the hardware are just not support, this phone barely play 720p movie. But any videos below 720p resolution could be play without any issue.

CPU Single Core Cortex A5 1Ghz
GPU Adreno 200
Chipset Qualcomm MSM7227A Snapdragon S1
RAM 512MB
ROM (storage) 4GB (2GB user available)

Software

Unlike Xperia E C1505 (single SIM), the dual SIM version of Xperia E comes with ICS 4.0.4 right out of the box instead of jelly bean. Xperia E dual is upgradable to android 4.2 jelly bean.

Even though Xperia E dual currently running ICS 4.0.4, but there are few different from other Xperia smartphones that also runs ICS 4.0.4, Sony makes some modification to the UI. Like for example, below the lockscreen there is a SIM card 1 and 2 status

Camera

Sony Xperia E dual (and single too) has 3.15 mega pixels camera on the back with no LED flash and lack of autofocus. And there is no front facing camera too, so you won’t be able to do video chat on Xperia E.

To be honest, the camera of Xperia E is like the one on Xperia Tipo (and Tipo dual), there’s nothing special about the camera. It’s basically a low end camera that can shoot photos and record videos with minimum quality.

Surprisingly, Xperia E has a dedicated camera button (shutter button), which usually only found in mid-high end smartphones. Despite the minimum quality of the camera, a shutter button would be a good thing for this low-end smartphone.

LED flash no
Video record VGA at 30 fps
Front camera no

Benchmark

Sony Xperia E dual gets 5377 points on antutu benchmark, which quite high for low-end device, i’m very surprised. And for quadrant standard, Xperia E dual gets 1935 points which is higher than Xperia Tipo dual.

While for graphics benchmark, Xperia E dual manage to score 27.4 frame per second on Nenamark 2 benchmark, and again higher than Xperia Tipo dual (15.8 fps). Finally, for web browsing benchmark, Xperia E gets 3279.8 ms.

Sony Xperia E Dual C1605
Antutu Benchmark 5377 points
Quadrant Standard Benchmark 1935 points
Nenamark 2 Benchmark 27.4 fps
SunSpider 3279.8 ms

Conclusion

From the benchmark result, we can see that Xperia E dual is clearly a lot better than Xperia Tipo dual in terms of hardware performance. But for the price, Xperia Tipo dual is cheaper than Xperia E dual.
